The new, standardised ‘cannulation’ courses offer learners the opportunity to learn cannulation in a four-hour course. This single skill course is being offered as an alternative to the ‘combined venepuncture and cannulation course’ in which both skills are taught in only four hours and that fast pace is not suitable for everyone. Some clinical areas only require one skill for their role and the single skills courses offer them the opportunity to learn that.
Learners are required to complete the B. Braun eLearning package prior to attending the cannulation course and will not be admitted to the face-to-face course if it is not completed. A link to the eLearning package will be sent out to learners via email, prior to attending the course.

If your area required numerous places for the same skill, we may be able to deliver a bespoke skills session just for you.

IMPORTANT: On completion of this workshop you will be required to have your competency assessed before independent practice. You MUST have access to a clinical area prior to attending this workshop. Please ensure your clinical area can support this process before booking, as we are unable to facilitate this, thank you.
The courses consist of a theory-based presentation covering all the required topics including:
- consent,
- anatomy & physiology
- indications & contraindications,
- diversity,
- hazards,
- complications,
- documentation.
A practical session will follow, during which learners practice on mannequin arms, allowing them to gain confidence and competence with the skill.
Finally, every learner will be required to pass a summative assessment, using an approved, standardised assessment tool before leaving the course.
Learners will then be required to undertake ten further assessments for the skill, in their own clinical area before being declared independently competent.
