This trial was looking at the use of intravenous (administered through a drip in the arm) levetiracetam versus intravenous phenytoin in non-terminating acute, prolonged tonic–clonic seizures including convulsive status epilepticus in children. This was an open label study (we knew what was being given). The study aimed to see which open label drug terminates seizures more effectively in order to see if treatment should be streamlined to one drug across the NHS. It is important as currently different NHS Trusts use one or the other drug and there is no national protocol for status epilepticus in the UK.
