Do you work in a health-related business or department? Do your staff need their mandatory basic life support training? Then this is the course for you and your team.
This outstanding half-day basic life support course is delivered by highly experienced DREEAM educators, all of whom are Resuscitation Council approved instructors. Their expertise ensures participants receive top-quality training, equipping them with the essential skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergency situations. This course will cover all your annual, mandatory training requirements for basic life support. “Mandatory training is compulsory training that is determined essential by an organisation for the safe and efficient delivery of services. This type of training is designed to reduce organisational risks and comply with local and national policies and government guidelines” (Royal College of Nursing, 2025). Basic life support is a vital skill for all health-related professionals, being able to identify a cardio-respiratory arrest, start early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and deliver a safe, defibrillator shock can be the difference between life and death and early CPR and defibrillation has been identified by NHS England (2017) as two of the most important factors that affect survival rates. CPR is delivered to approximately 30,000 people each year that experience a cardiac arrest in a community setting (NHS England, 2017) and less that one in twelve patients survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest (Resuscitation Council, 2025). By attending our basic life support course, your staff will be confident and competent to manage a cardiac arrest situation, giving your patients the best chance of survival.

Start & finish times:
This is a 3-4 hour course depending on the numbers of candidates attending.
Breaks are built into the timetable.
The course will be delivered as follows:
- Discussion on possible incidents of cardio-respiratory arrest in your business or department
- Defibrillator competency, to ensure participants know how to use a defibrillator and its component parts.
- How to provide effective chest compressions
- How to manage an airway during CPR, if equipment available
- How to deliver a safe, effective shock using an automated defibrillator
Once participants are confident with their practice, the summative assessment will be carried out using a four- stage approach:
- The facilitator will demonstrate a scenario in real time to show participants what is expected of them during their assessment
- The facilitator will demonstrate the same scenario at a slower pace, while providing a comprehensive explanation of each step
- The facilitator will demonstrate the same scenario a third time, however participants will be expected to use their newly acquired knowledge to direct the facilitator to perform each step
- The participants will be given their own scenario and can demonstrate their competence in patient assessment, escalation, CPR and defibrillation
The course will then conclude with:
- Discussion on how and when to use the recovery position
- How to manage a choking situation with back slaps and abdominal thrusts
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand medical conditions and situations in your environment that can lead to a cardiorespiratory arrest.
- Demonstrate safe assessment of a collapsed patient using an ABC and look, listen and feel approach, to identify a person in cardiorespiratory arrest.
- Demonstrate effective cardiorespiratory resuscitation (CPR) using the approved resuscitation council algorithm.
- Demonstrate safe use of an automated defibrillator.
- Demonstrate how to put someone in the recovery position and understand when to do this.
- Demonstrate how to clear the airway of a patient chocking using abdominal thrusts and back slaps, using the approved resuscitation council algorithm.
- Understand the need for immediate medical assistance in any of these situations and how to call for help and escalate the situation to colleagues in your environment.
