Course Overview
The one-day course involves taught theory sessions in the morning and a practical workshop in the afternoon to consolidate learnt skills. Participants will attend sessions on:
- Causes of a neck haematoma
- Pathophysiology of a neck haematoma
- Risk factors of a neck haematoma
- Management of a neck haematoma
The afternoon workshop will enable participants to practice managing the airway, across 3 scenarios of neck haematoma patients, and practice opening the neck confidently in a neck haematoma model. Participants will consolidate their learning by demonstrating understanding in real-life scenarios through a simulation and a written exam.

By attending the course, you will obtain skills to:
- Minimise the risk of a neck hematoma occurring
- Recognise a neck hematoma clinically
- Understand the causes and presentation of a neck hematoma in the post-operative patient
- Understand the different management strategies and when they are employed (conservative vs operative)
- Identify when to call for help and/or escalate to a senior
Becoming a trainer/faculty for the Course
Everyone is welcome to become a trainer/faculty for the Course. The only requirement is that you have previously attended the Course as a participant.
After that you will have:
- An initial training session with one of the Faculty members
- Your first Course participation as a Trainer with supervision/backup from one of the existing Faculty members
- If you are successful, you will then become a full Faculty member
